The Left Cross

Here are some great animations from Commute Orlando that illustrate good on-road practices. Also see their section On the Road for some tips about courteous cycling.  Remember, being on a bicycle is not a license to disobey traffic laws...  Going the wrong way on one-way streets, using the sidewalk and not signaling turns are all too common behaviors that contribute to the idea that cyclists are 'jerks'.

Another interesting blog I've been reading lately is called A View From the Cycle Path.  They got some buzz a few months ago for a video showing everyday bicycle traffic at a busy intersection in the Netherlands.  I enjoyed that video, but more interesting to me are the parts about infrastructure, for example this posting which highlights the real savings that infrastructure investment can mean:

The proceeds that can be attributed to bicycle highways considerably outweigh the costs. The next couple of years approximately €100 million will be invested in bicycle highways in the Netherlands. That will lead to future annual profits of at least €144 million in travel time gained, better health and environmental benefits.

Dutch Cycle Path

Above, an absolutely beautiful cycle path, Dutch, natch.

Now we all know that THIS IS NOT THE NETHERLANDS... but we can have aspirations right?  It's an interseting time to think about these issues considering the current political climate that puts a new value on shrinking 'big government' - without entering into that fray, lets just say I hope we manage to keep our wits about us when it comes to investing in infrastructure. Antother good read.
