A full five hundred and five bicyclists cycled through Jersey City streets on a perfect late spring Saturday, accompanied by 20 of Jersey City's finest bike police. Traveling 15 miles, from Exchange Place to Greenville to Lincoln Park to the Heights to Hamilton Park and back, we passed many of Jersey City's wonderful parks, neighborhoods, universities, and historic homes, such as the stately mansions along Danforth Ave and the brick townhomes near Sixth Street. As bikes took over the streets, riders and watchers all got to witness a human-powered parade in action. Babies in bike seats, tandems, fixies, trailers, mountain bikes, skinny tire racers, and vintage clunkers rolled into Exchange Place barely two hours after the Tour started, with everyone safe, happy, and thirsty.
Our undying gratitude goes to our sponsors and supporters the Jersey City Independent, the Downtown Jersey City HD SID, Grove Street Bicycles (and their awesome BMX demo), Easy Riders, Rocket-Dockit (and the thundering music), White Star (and their beer on tap), Satis, Pole Position Raceway, Madame Claude Wine, Madame Claude Cafe, the Institute for Personal Growth, Skinner's Loft, Captain Al's, Hamilton Park Montessori School, the Hudson Transportation Management Association, and Plant-Projects graphic design.
We were so happy to share the day with other local non-profits: the East Coast Greenway Alliance, the Jersey City Food Coop, Friends of Liberty State Park, the Liberty Humane Society, the Embankment Coalition, Uptown Crew, and the Jersey City Medical Center EMS team.
Come to a ride (check our calendar), and come back next year!
